LEADING EDGE™ for Transportation Construction is an 9-week business development course based upon the Colorado SBDC Network's flagship strategic planning series. It is customized to help small business owners in highway construction learn how to become more competitive and successful in the transportation industry. The course will help you determine the best growth strategy for your business to successfully perform on CDOT contracts and other transportation-related projects. By the end of the course, you will have an actionable business development plan in place.

This session is geared toward small business interested in working on CDOT and other local government transportation projects. The program will feature guests from CDOT and the various prime contractors who will get you prepared with a strategy for success. Thanks to a generous scholarship from CDOT, his program can be FREE for you when you graduate! 

What to Expect:

  • Peer learning with a group of construction contractors in the transportation industry
  • One-on-one coaching from course facilitators and consultants
  • Eight three-hour weekly workshops including small group exercises and guest speakers
  • Introduction to industry mentors and opportunities to connect with prime contractors, community leaders, government agencies and other resources
  • Creation or update of your business development plan 


  • Automatic eligibility and entry into the upcoming CDOT Mentor-Protege program
  • Entry into the Colorado SBDC Annual Business Plan Competition with cash prizes for top awardees
  • Invitation to an exclusive Meet & Greet event for LE graduates with prime contractors

Firms may apply for scholarships to cover the full cost of the program. A 50% scholarship is offered to eligible businesses upon registration. A 50% tuition reimbursement will be provided to firms who graduate and attend at least 7 sessions, actively participate in course discussion and complete assignments, submit a business development plan and meet one-on-one with an SBDC consultant.


  • Standard Program Fee -$450
  • SPECIAL (half price with CDOT Scholarship) - $200 deposit and $0 if you complete the program

  • In business 2+ years (or equivalent industry experience)
  • Minimum of $100,000 in annual sales
  • May have employees or may be working alone but planning to hire
  • Able to provide a balance sheet, statement of cash flow, income statement and quarterly profit and loss statements
  • Eager to learn and committed to growing your business
  • Certified DBE/ESB/MWBE/SBE companies preferred
